Snow leopards represent an entire habitat: the high mountain regions of Asia. If the snow leopards are faring well, this shows that there are enough prey animals such as wild goats and sheep, and intact mountain pastures and vegetation for these herbivores to feed on. Thus the big cats are an excellent indicator of the general ecological condition of the region they live in.

The high mountain ranges of Asia are not only rich in wild animals and plants, they are also crucial for the water supply of a third of the world’s population. With their huge glaciers, they are important reservoirs and the sources of numerous large rivers, which supply 22 countries with water, including the whole capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent.
